Equal Pay Day / Unhappy Hour

Chair: Kristin Guenthardt

Members: Amy Grashel, Tami Simms-Powel, Kris Self, Kristine Ketcham, Marlene Connelly, Aimee Bennett, Christine Weigle, Kitty Pelster-Rawson

Purpose:The annual "Unhappy Hour" event is held in recognition of Equal Pay Day, and normally occurs in April. The proceeds of the event benefit the Red Purse Society, a BPW/USA effort to focus on equalizing pay for men and women in equal jobs. Equal Pay Day marks the day the average woman in the United States finally earns the same amount of pay that her male counterpart earned in the previous year. According to the 2005 U.S. Census Bureau, the average woman is paid 77 cents for every dollar a man is paid. Therefore, if a man was paid $50,000 to perform his job from January 1 through December 31, 2005, it takes a woman in the same position, on average, from January 1, 2005, through April 25, 2006, to earn the same amount.

Meetings: The committee meets as-needed to plan the event, usually beginning 2-3 months prior to the event date.
